On Thursday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Japanese Yoshimasa Hayashi, US Defense Ministers Lloyd Austin and his Japanese counterpart Nobu Kishi held a video conference in which they discussed ways to strengthen the security alliance between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a joint statement, the US and Japanese ministers expressed \u201csevere and persistent concerns\u201d about human rights issues in China\u2019s two regions, Xinjiang and Hong Kong, and stressed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Blinken said that his country and Japan will also sign a new 5-year agreement covering the continued presence of US forces in Japan, as Tokyo agreed to pay $9.3 billion to participate in the costs of maintaining the forces during the mentioned period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Referring to China\u2019s ambitions in the Indo-Pacific region, the Japanese foreign minister said it \u201chas become more important than ever for Japan and the United States to unite and show leadership in the face of a number of challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
