{"id":4543,"date":"2022-03-24T14:42:29","date_gmt":"2022-03-24T14:42:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ameforum.net\/?p=4543"},"modified":"2022-03-24T14:42:54","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T14:42:54","slug":"pakistan-pm-lauds-un-for-international-day-to-combat-islamophobia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ameforum.net\/ar\/pakistan-pm-lauds-un-for-international-day-to-combat-islamophobia\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan PM lauds UN for International Day to Combat Islamophobia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Imran Khan welcomes UNGA\u2019s approval to resolution introduced by Pakistan setting March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.<\/em><br><br>Pakistan\u2019s Prime Minister Imran Khan has welcomed a decision by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to approve a resolution setting March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resolution, adopted on Tuesday by consensus by the 193-member world body and co-sponsored by 55 mainly Muslim countries, emphasises the right to freedom of religion and belief and recalls a 1981 resolution calling for \u201cthe elimination of all forms of intolerance and of discrimination based on religion or belief\u201d.<br>The resolution was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/10\/29\/pakistans-khan-calls-for-muslim-unity-against-islamophobia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced by Pakistan<\/a>\u00a0on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It marks the day when a gunman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/3\/13\/new-zealand-marks-two-years-since-christchurch-mosque-killings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entered two mosques<\/a>\u00a0in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 51 people and injuring 40 others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a tweet on Tuesday evening, Khan\u00a0congratulated Muslims around the world \u201cas our voice against the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/tag\/islamophobia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rising tide of Islamophobia<\/a>\u00a0has been heard\u201d.<br><br>\u201cToday UN has finally recognised the grave challenge confronting the world: of Islamophobia, respect for religious symbols and practices and of curtailing systematic hate speech and discrimination against Muslims,\u201d Khan posted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNext challenge is to ensure implementation of this landmark resolution.\u201d<br>The resolution expresses deep concern at \u201cthe overall rise in instances of discrimination,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/9\/25\/pakistan-pm-khan-slams-india-over-kashmir-islamophobia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intolerance and violence<\/a>, regardless of the actors, directed against members of many religions and other communities in various parts of the world, including cases motivated by Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, Christianophobia and prejudices against persons of other religions or beliefs\u201d.<br>The resolution asks all countries, UN bodies, international and regional organisations, civil society, the private sector, and faith-based organisations \u201cto organise and support various high-visibility events aimed at effectively increasing awareness of all levels about curbing Islamophobia\u201d, and to observe the new International Day to Combat Islamophobia.<br><br>Formally introducing the resolution, Pakistan\u2019s UN envoy Munir Akram on Tuesday said Islamophobia has become a \u201creality\u201d that is \u201cproliferating in several parts of the world\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSuch acts of discrimination, hostility and violence towards Muslims \u2013 individuals and communities \u2013 constitute grave violations of their human rights, and violate their freedom of religion and belief,\u201d Akram said in the General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is particularly alarming these days, for it has emerged as a new form of racism characterised by xenophobia, negative profiling and stereotyping of Muslims.\u201d<br><br>SOURCE:\u00a0AL JAZEERA AND NEWS AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imran Khan welcomes UNGA\u2019s approval to resolution introduced by Pakistan setting March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.Pakistan\u2019s Prime Minister Imran Khan has welcomed a decision by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to approve a resolution setting March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
