{"id":5125,"date":"2023-01-14T12:19:42","date_gmt":"2023-01-14T12:19:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ameforum.net\/?p=5125"},"modified":"2023-01-14T12:20:27","modified_gmt":"2023-01-14T12:20:27","slug":"uk-minister-prays-at-al-aqsa-and-condemns-israel-demolitions-in-west-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ameforum.net\/ar\/uk-minister-prays-at-al-aqsa-and-condemns-israel-demolitions-in-west-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"UK minister prays at al-Aqsa and condemns Israel demolitions in West Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK<\/a>\u2019s Middle East minister visited and prayed at al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem on Thursday, where he emphasised the UK\u2019s support for Jordanian custodianship over the holy site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lord Tariq Ahmad visited the mosque after being blocked from entering for 30 minutes by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Israeli<\/a>&nbsp;security forces, according to the BBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8216;I emphasised the UK\u2019s unwavering support for Jordanian custodianship of Jerusalem\u2019s holy sites and for the status quo&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8211; Lord Ahmad<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahmad, who is a Muslim, entered the site accompanied by the head of the Islamic Waqf, the religious authority which administers the site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was his first official visit to Israel and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/palestine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Palestine<\/a>&nbsp;since becoming the minister of state for the Middle East and North Africa in June 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn honour and privilege to spend time at the holy al-Aqsa Mosque this morning with the director of Jerusalem Waqf Department, Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib,\u201d he tweeted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI emphasised the UK\u2019s unwavering support for Jordanian custodianship of Jerusalem\u2019s holy sites and for the status quo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al-Aqsa Mosque is one of the holiest sites in Islam and the site of the Jewish temple destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan has been the official custodian of Christian and Muslim holy places in Jerusalem since 1924.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Israel occupied the site following the 1967 Middle East war, Jewish prayer at the site has been forbidden, though far-right settlers have frequently prayed there under Israeli security in recent years. Some religious activists want to demolish Al-Aqsa and replace it with a third Jewish temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, Israel&#8217;s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/israel-ben-gvir-storms-al-aqsa-deliberate-provocation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stormed the mosque\u2019s courtyard<\/a>&nbsp;in what was described as an \u201cunprecedented provocation\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;Desist demolitions&#8217;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahmad visited the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, where he was shown around a school run by UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also visited Masafer Yatta, a collection of small Palestinian villages near Hebron that Israel has designated a zone for military exercises.
