Korean embassy\u2019s \u2018protest&#8217;\u201d, the English-language tabloid bristled at a \u201cstrong protest\u201d sent to its editors last week by Seoul\u2019s embassy in Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter, sent on Friday, criticised the Global Times\u2019s reporting of the visit as well as a number of its columns and editorials. A letter was also sent to the editor of the Huanqiu Shibao, a newspaper that is part of the Communist Party\u2019s People\u2019s Daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The embassy accused the state-run papers of \u201cusing sensational, provocative and inappropriate language\u201d that \u201cdisparaged our president as well as the foreign policy of our government\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome of the criticism levied at our president, using words so vulgar that they are barely repeatable, will make one wonder if they even come from news media at all,\u201d the embassy added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Global Times, known for its nationalistic reporting, showed no contrition for the rare public rebuke from a foreign embassy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSuch words that crossed boundaries and came with strong emotions should not come from a diplomatic institution,\u201d the editorial said. \u201cWe cannot accept the rather brutal interference in our independent reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Bowing to Japan\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yoon, a conservative politician who was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/3\/9\/south-korean-opposition-candidate-yoon-wins-presidential-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elected last year<\/a>, is seeking to build closer ties with the US and Japan amid heightened tensions in the region over the challenges posed by North Korea\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/11\/9\/after-a-record-year-of-arms-testing-what-is-in-n-koreas-arsenal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aggressive weapons testing<\/a>, and an increasingly assertive China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has overseen deepening military ties with Washington and spent six days in the US in April where he was honoured with a state dinner marking 70 years of the two countries\u2019 alliance, and also addressed a joint session of US Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\" id=\"attachment_2191316\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2023-05-08T044600Z_1459185912_RC24U0A5LSJN_RTRMADP_3_SOUTHKOREA-JAPAN-1683530731.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"President Yoon hosting Japanese PM Fumio Kishida and his wife for dinner at the presidential house. A chef is standing at the end of the table.\" class=\"wp-image-2191316\" width=\"1034\" height=\"689\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has worked to improve ties with Japan and overcome strains that are a legacy of Japan\u2019s colonial rule [The Presidential Office\/Handout via Reuters]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The month before, Yoon had travelled to Tokyo, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/3\/16\/s-koreas-yoon-visits-japan-renew-ties-amid-n-korea-threat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first visit by a South Korean leader in 12 years<\/a>, as he sought to overcome years of historical animosity stemming from Japan\u2019s colonial rule of the Korean peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Global Times reporting accused him of \u201cblindly following the US\u201d and \u201cbowing to Japan to please Washington\u201d claiming Seoul\u2019s actions contributed to tensions in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The South Korean embassy singled out reporting on April 26, April 30, May 3 and May 4, although it did not mention specific articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wonder how the Chinese people would react if the Korean media published daily reports criticising the Chinese leader in the same way,\u201d the letter said, adding that professional journalists needed to abide by certain standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Global Times editorial noted that Japan\u2019s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida started a landmark two-day&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/5\/7\/japans-kishida-visits-s-korea-to-boost-ties-amid-n-korea-threat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visit<\/a>&nbsp;to Seoul on May 7, and that it was happy to see an improved relationship between the two countries providing it did not \u201charm\u201d China\u2019s interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insisting that its editorials had been \u201cas polite as possible\u201d, the paper continued: \u201cSince the current South Korean government came to power, it has catered to the actions of the US, Japan and other countries of undermining regional stability. It has also repeatedly made wrong remarks on major issues that concern China\u2019s sovereignty and grossly interfered in China\u2019s internal affairs, such as the Taiwan question. Now it is targeting a Chinese media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf South Korea\u2019s diplomacy continues in this direction, the consequences will not only be the estrangement of relations between China and South Korea, or the loss of South Korea\u2019s \u2018national dignity\u2019 in front of Washington and Tokyo. Rather, it will stimulate, induce, and aggravate the imbalance and even collapse of the situation in Northeast Asia.
