German ambassador to the Palestinian Authority assaulted by protesters during his visit to the West Bank
The car of the German ambassador to the Palestinian Authority, Oliver Oftsa, was attacked by Palestinian protesters on Tuesday as he was heading to the site of Bir Zeit University in the West Bank. About 100 people threw stones at the car, broke its rearview mirror, tore off the license plate and tried to smash the windows to attack the diplomat directly, damaging his car and forcing him to flee the scene. Berlin has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
The attack was apparently intended to protest Berlin's support for Israel, and against the position of Chancellor Olaf Schulz, who has repeatedly opposed a long-term ceasefire in Gaza, fearing that it would not allow Hamas to rearm. Germany has also strongly opposed genocide accusations against Israel in The Hague.
The incident occurred when Ofcza arrived at the Palestine Museum, located on the university's campus.
Videos circulating online captured the chaotic scene, showing students shouting and taunting the diplomat and demanding his departure. As the situation escalated, the ambassador's car was targeted, with students throwing objects and damaging the vehicle.
Germany, a traditional supporter of Israel, has advocated for Palestinian rights and the need for a solution to the conflict that includes the creation of a Palestinian state.
