Pentagon: Russia is more dangerous than China in the short term

China may be the primary threat to the United States, but Russia may pose a greater threat in the short term, according to U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs Colin Kahl.

In the coming years, Russia may indeed become the biggest security challenge the United States, and certainly Europe, faces in the military sphere, he said, describing it as an increasingly assertive adversary that is steadily seeking to consolidate its influence in the world and play a destabilizing role on the international stage.

Kahl accused Moscow of undermining transparency and predictability, using military force to achieve its goals, supporting proxy groups to sow chaos and uncertainty, and violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its neighbors.

He concluded by saying that the United States will deal with Russia from a position of collective strength, emphasizing that US forces deployed in Europe remain strong, ready and flexible and provide solid and effective deterrence, noting that at NATO they are working with their allies to ensure military readiness to reinforce solid combat deterrence throughout the transatlantic community.
