China reiterates its opposition to US sanctions on Iran
China on Saturday reiterated its opposition to unilateral US sanctions on Iran at a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, while supporting efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal between major powers and Iran.
"The United States bears the primary responsibility for the ongoing difficulties with Iran after its unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018," Wang said, emphasizing that "China strongly supports the resumption of negotiations on the nuclear deal.
"China strongly opposes illegal unilateral sanctions against Iran and political manipulation through topics including human rights and interference in the internal affairs of Iran and other countries in the region," Wang noted.
In the same vein, the Iranian foreign minister is set to announce the inauguration of a 25-year cooperation agreement between Tehran and China during his visit.
After the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal, it reimposed sanctions that hit the Iranian economy hard and said the terms of the deal were not enough to curb Iran's nuclear activities, ballistic missile program and regional influence.
The United States and Iran have been in indirect talks about a possible compromise to renew the deal and ease fears of a wider war in the Middle East.
