Imran Khan's troubles with the Pakistani judiciary are endless: 10 years in prison for "leaking state secrets"

A Pakistani court on Tuesday sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to ten years in prison for leaking the content of a classified diplomatic cable.

Special court judge Abul Hasnat Zulkarnain convicted Khan and his former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi after several hearings held in prison.

A spokesperson for Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party confirmed:" "The two were sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Both politicians pleaded not guilty when they were charged last October with revealing a state secret at a public gathering.

Party president Advocate Gohar Khan said: "We will challenge today's court proceedings in the Supreme Court," and urged party supporters to remain calm.

The court's decision came weeks before national elections, with Khan's party knocked out of the race and its leaders facing severe restrictions.

Imran Khan, a 70-year-old former sports star, has been facing a series of accusations since he was removed as prime minister in a parliamentary no-confidence vote last year.
