{"id":10862,"date":"2024-04-28T11:17:11","date_gmt":"2024-04-28T11:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ameforum.net\/?p=10862"},"modified":"2024-04-28T11:18:01","modified_gmt":"2024-04-28T11:18:01","slug":"hundreds-of-university-students-arrested-in-us-as-gaza-war-protests-spread","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ameforum.net\/en\/hundreds-of-university-students-arrested-in-us-as-gaza-war-protests-spread\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of university students arrested in US as Gaza war protests spread"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hundreds of students have been arrested across universities in the United States as protesters continue to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2024\/4\/27\/from-la-to-new-york-student-protests-in-support-of-palestine-grow-strong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demand a ceasefire<\/a>&nbsp;in Gaza and divestment from companies enabling Israel\u2019s nearly seven-month war on the Palestinian enclave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police were out in full force on college campuses on Saturday, some using chemical irritants and Tasers to disperse the students, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/4\/27\/pro-palestinian-student-protests-spread-in-second-week-of-demonstrations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more universities<\/a>\u00a0witnessed protests against the continued bombing of the Gaza Strip and seeking an end to US military assistance for Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Boston, police detained about 100 people while clearing a protest camp at Northeastern University, with social media posts showing security forces in riot gear and officers loading tents onto the back of a truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\" id=\"attachment_2864764\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/AP24118470691692-1714286410.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C578\" alt=\"Police clear an encampment on the Northeastern University campus in Boston, early Saturday, April 27, 2024.\" class=\"wp-image-2864764\" style=\"width:875px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Police clear an encampment on the Northeastern University campus in Boston [Michael Casey\/AP Photo]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement on X, Northeastern said the area on campus where the protests were held was now \u201cfully secured\u201d and \u201call campus operations have returned to normal\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The school said its move came after \u201cwhat began as a student demonstration two days ago was infiltrated by professional organisers with no affiliation to Northeastern\u201d. It added that detained individuals who produced a valid school ID were released and will face disciplinary proceedings, not legal action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Bloomington in the Midwest, the Indiana&nbsp;University Police Department arrested 23 people as they cleared a campus protest camp, the Indiana Daily Student newspaper reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the opposite side of the country, the Arizona State University Police Department arrested 69 people for trespassing after the group set up an \u201cunauthorised encampment\u201d on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arizona state officials said a protest group, \u201cmost of whom were not ASU students, faculty or staff\u201d, set up a camp on Friday and ignored repeated orders to disperse.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"770\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/ameforum.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2024-04-26T231245Z_354208469_RC21E7A5I7ER_RTRMADP_3_ISRAEL-PALESTINIANS-USA-PROTESTS-1714286422.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10865\" style=\"width:875px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ameforum.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2024-04-26T231245Z_354208469_RC21E7A5I7ER_RTRMADP_3_ISRAEL-PALESTINIANS-USA-PROTESTS-1714286422.webp 770w, https:\/\/ameforum.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2024-04-26T231245Z_354208469_RC21E7A5I7ER_RTRMADP_3_ISRAEL-PALESTINIANS-USA-PROTESTS-1714286422-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/ameforum.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2024-04-26T231245Z_354208469_RC21E7A5I7ER_RTRMADP_3_ISRAEL-PALESTINIANS-USA-PROTESTS-1714286422-768x512.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Students gather for a Pro-Palestinian protest at the Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona [Liliana Salgado\/Reuters]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, at Washington University in St Louis, at least 80 people were arrested, including US presidential candidate Jill Stein and her campaign manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the US, university leaders have tried, and largely failed, to&nbsp;quell the demonstrations, which often saw the police intervening violently, with videos emerging from different states showing hundreds of students \u2013 and even faculty members \u2013 being forcefully arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protesters have demanded amnesty for students and faculty members disciplined or fired for protesting. About a week ago at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/4\/27\/columbia-universitys-shafik-rebuked-over-gaza-crackdown-but-avoids-censure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Columbia University<\/a>&nbsp;in New York, more than 100 pro-Palestinian activists were arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What started at the Columbia campus has turned into a nationwide showdown between students and administrators over pro-Palestine protests and the restrictions on free speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past 10 days, hundreds of students have been arrested, suspended, put on probation and, in rare cases, expelled from colleges, including Yale University, the University of Southern California, Vanderbilt University and the University of Minnesota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few universities had to cancel graduation ceremonies, while others have seen their buildings occupied by the protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"students-taking-big-risks\">Students taking \u2018big risks\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s John Hendren, reporting from Princeton University in New Jersey, said \u201cthe price of protests can be high\u201d for the students occupying college campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents are taking some big risks at these protests. If they violate university rules, they can be expelled. And here at Princeton, tuition is over $50,000 a year,\u201d he said. \u201cFor many of them, it\u2019s an education they have been looking forward to all their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Princeton student Sam Bisno told Al Jazeera taking such risks showed how \u201cpassionate\u201d students were about the issue. \u201cPeople are willing to put it all on the line. He said such students received no protection from their school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe no longer have faith in the administration to be a place safe for Muslim students, for Arab students, for Palestinian students and by and large those students of colour and pro-Palestinian students,\u201d Taal said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maysam Elghazali, an organiser of the protests at Emory University in Atlanta, said the demonstrating students had three demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNumber one, that Emory disclose all of its financial investments.
