The protests were organised in the backdrop of female students wearing hijabs being denied entry to various junior and graduate colleges in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women-only protests were held in several locations across the state, including Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hassan, Kolar, Shahapur, Shivamogga and Udupi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the protest in Udupi, hundreds of hijab-wearing women, including university students and housewives, demanded protection of their \u201cconstitutional rights\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hijab-wearing students in the state are facing challenges from Hindu extremists, the BJP-run state government and some college managements. Hindutva groups made Muslims students\u2019 head scarves an issue in several Karnataka colleges in recent days, and organised their members and sympathisers among the students against young Muslim women. Many colleges saw Hindu students coming to the classes wearing saffron shawls, a cloth they usually don\u2019t wear, \u201cto protest\u201d the presence of Muslim female students in hijabs.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.thewire.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/08140711\/Photo-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"394\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-580201\">A view of the Muslim women\u2019s pro-hijab protest in Udupi, Karnataka, on February 07, 2022. Photo: Muhammed Sabith<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday (February 7), Muslim female students continued facing problems at their colleges. While Muslim students did not even appear in some colleges, in other colleges, the management continued denying them access to classes and even made them sit in a separate room,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/rights\/udupi-hijab-wearing-students-allowed-into-college-made-to-sit-in-separate-room\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sparking concerns about segregation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Chandravathi Shetty, principal of Sri Sharada College at Basrur in Udupi, where the Muslim students were allegedly made to sit in a separate room, refused to comment over the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor K. Umesh Shetty, principal of Dr. B.B. Hegde First Grade College in Udupi\u2019s Kundapur, said \u201cno student came to the college with headscarf\u201d on Monday. When asked about the college\u2019s stand on the hijab, he said \u201cwe\u2019re going as per the order of the state government as well as the management (sic),\u201d he said. \u201cThey [female students] are not supposed to wear the headscarves inside the class.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KeypadGuerilla\/status\/1490946063280533504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">there are reports<\/a>&nbsp;of more intense and aggressive protests by Hindu extremist students and youth on Tuesday, including heckling of Muslim female students, stone pelting at a college and replacing the national flag with a saffron flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cProtest for education, dignity\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Muslim woman activist who spoke at the protest event in Udupi said their struggle is \u201cto protect our sisters\u2019 education, our dignity, our religious freedom and our country\u2019s Constitution\u201d. \u201cIt\u2019s not a hijab controversy, it\u2019s a saffron controversy,\u201d adding that the hijab-wearing women become \u201cdoctors, engineers and pilots\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rumana, 20, a student of Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) at a university in the region, was among the participants at the pro-hijab protest in Udupi. \u201cWearing hijab is our fundamental right,\u201d she told&nbsp;<em>The Wire<\/em>. \u201cNo one can snatch it from us.\u201d Rumana said she wants the government \u201cnot to create divisions\u201d among the students on religious lines. Photo: Special arrangement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWe want our college respect our rights\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students of the Government Pre University Girls College in Udupi, who first raised the issue of discrimination for wearing headscarves at colleges, were among the protestors gathered in Udupi on Monday. They said their non-Muslim friends and teachers turned hostile towards them after the issue attracted wider public attention. \u201cOur [non-Muslim] friends were supportive in the beginning. They\u2019re not supporting us now,\u201d said Hazra Shifa, a student. \u201cThey even complained against us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students also said they were subjected to online harassment after they raised their voice. \u201cWe are getting threats\u2026our phone numbers, addresses and even the Aadhaar numbers have been leaked,\u201d said the students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the state home department directed the police to probe the pro-hijab protests. \u201cI have directed police to discover who is behind this development,\u201d home minister Aaraga Jnanendra&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanherald.com\/state\/top-karnataka-stories\/headscarf-row-udupi-mla-seeks-probe-against-students-1079132.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;reporters on Monday. Speaking to&nbsp;<em>The Wire<\/em>, the Udupi students said they and their parents approached Campus Front of India (CFI), a Muslim students\u2019 organisation, for support. Masood Manna, a Karnataka state leader of the CFI, told&nbsp;<em>The Wire&nbsp;<\/em>his organisation is actively supporting the students. In a recent press conference in Bengaluru, the CFI leaders&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/CampusFrontInd\/status\/1489941982348668929\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;the restriction of hijab in the colleges is \u201cpart of a larger conspiracy to dehumanise Muslim women\u201d. Masood said the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanherald.com\/state\/mangaluru\/conspiracy-to-keep-muslim-students-outside-classrooms-1078226.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Muslim Okkuta<\/a>, an umbrella group of different Muslim organisations in Karnataka, also supports the students\u2019 cause.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.thewire.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/08141129\/Photo-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-580206\">A Muslim woman activist speaks during the pro-hijab protest in Udupi, on February 07, 2022. Photo: Special arrangement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just before Monday\u2019s protest, the young Udupi girls told&nbsp;<em>The Wire<\/em>&nbsp;that their struggle is to protect their \u201cconstitutional rights\u201d and for nothing else. \u201cWe have trust and belief in our country\u2019s democratic system and judiciary. We hope our college will respect and value our rights,\u201d they said. One of the Muslim students denied access to the classes recently wrote that her college was forcing her, and other Muslim women students, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/article\/1016683\/i-was-made-to-realise-i-am-a-muslim-a-student-shares-her-account-of-the-udupi-college-hijab-ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to choose between studies and the hijab<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Karnataka high court is scheduled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewsminute.com\/article\/karnataka-hijab-row-high-court-hear-student-s-plea-tuesday-160563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to hear a writ petition<\/a>&nbsp;on Tuesday filed by a Muslim student who argued that wearing a hijab is her fundamental right guaranteed under Article 14 and 25 of the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, the state government, through an order,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanherald.com\/state\/top-karnataka-stories\/amid-hijab-row-karnataka-government-orders-uniform-dress-code-in-all-schools-colleges-1078432.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a>&nbsp;the school and college students to strictly adhere to the uniforms approved by the state government and other competent authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Karnataka chief minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/cities\/bangalore\/cong-speaks-out-on-udupi-hijab-row-girls-rights-being-violated-7757780\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;restricting the Muslim female students\u2019 access to their classes is a violation of their fundamental rights. \u201cThis is an effort to prevent Muslim girls from getting educated. The head scarf is part of their religion \u2026 It is a violation of the fundamental rights of the students,\u201d Siddaramaiah said. However, for the BJP, the students\u2019 demand for hijab is similar to demanding the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/CTRavi_BJP\/status\/1489456886173040643\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sharia law<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several Opposition parties, including Congress, Trinamool Congress, Left parties, RJD, NCP and the BSP, recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/karnataka-hijab-row-students-banned-entry-7758878\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">came forward<\/a>\u00a0supporting the Muslim female students\u2019 demand.<br><br>(Source: The Wire)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Muslim women on Monday held protest events at different locations in Karnataka demanding the protection of their constitutional rights, including religious freedom.
