Pakistan calls for engagement with Taliban

In his address to the United Nations General Assembly, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan urged the countries of the world to support the current government in Afghanistan and help it achieve stability, because this will be beneficial for all.

In other statements to the US magazine “Newsweek”, Khan said that the Taliban could be a partner of the United States in the process of establishing peace in Afghanistan.

He stressed on the need for concerted efforts of the international community to ensure that a failure in the political process in Kabul is prevented, pointing out that Washington has cooperated directly with the Taliban in the evacuations from Afghanistan, and that it can work with the new government in Afghanistan to promote common interests and regional stability.

Washington welcomes Taiwan trade bid

The United States praised Taiwan’s record as a candidate to join a trans-Pacific trade deal and criticised Beijing for stepping up jet incursions near the island.

Taiwan, a self-governing democracy claimed by Beijing, formally sought on Thursday to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) after years of lobbying following communist China’s own application for membership.

The vast trade pact is a successor to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which was championed by the United States until former president Donald Trump withdrew in 2017, calling it bad for workers.

President Joe Biden’s administration, which is close to organised labour, has made clear it is not rushing to rejoin and the State Department acknowledged it had no formal say in the Chinese and Taiwanese applications.

“That said, we would expect that Taiwan’s record as a responsible member of the World Trade Organisation and Taiwan’s strong embrace of democratic values would factor into the CPTPP parties’ evaluation of Taiwan as a potential candidate for accession,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters.

“We urge Beijing to cease its military, diplomatic and economic pressure against Taiwan and instead engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan,” he said.

Taiwan said that 24 Chinese planes, including 18 fighter jets and two nuclear-capable bombers, crossed into the island’s air defense identification zone on the day of the application announcement.

China condemns the partnership agreement between US, Britain and Australia

China condemned the partnership agreement between the United States, Britain and Australia, saying that it would undermine regional stability.

The Chinese government considered that the conclusion of a new partnership agreement by the United States, Britain and Australia, which includes building submarines for the Australian army, undermines regional stability and represents an irresponsible step.

“Cooperation on nuclear submarines between the United States, Britain and Australia will only accelerate the arms race,” China’s ambassador to the United States, Tsin Gan, said during a video conference organized by the George Bush Fund and Jimmy Carter Center.

“It undermines regional peace and stability and ignores international efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons… This is extremely irresponsible,” Tsin Gan added.

US accuses Russia and China of “disinformation” about withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan

The US Secretary of Internal Security, Alejandro Mallorcas, accused Russia and China of practicing “disinformation” about the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan.

In an affidavit to the US Senate, Mallorkas said: “Russia and China, as well as other actors, continue to amplify and disseminate misinformation to the international and US public on issues such as racial justice, false claims about the 2020 election, and the effectiveness of US coronavirus vaccines compared to Russian and Chinese vaccines. The same goes for our withdrawal from Afghanistan.”

Earlier, the United States accused Russia and China of publishing misleading information on a number of topics, and Moscow and Beijing denied the matter altogether.

As for Afghanistan, the Taliban movement again took control of the country in early August, and its militants entered Kabul in the middle of the month, and the movement announced the next day the end of the war.

US forces completed their withdrawal and evacuated Kabul Airport on the night of August 31, ending nearly 20 years of the US military presence in this country.

Xi Jinping: China will never attack any other countries

Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged from the podium of the United Nations that China would never attack any other countries.

In a video address during the general political debate of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Xi Jinping said that his country seeks peaceful relations with countries of the world.

“China will never attack any other countries, will not oppress anyone, and will not seek to establish its hegemony,” he said.

The Chinese president also confirmed that his country aims to provide the world with two billion doses of vaccines against the infection of the Corona virus “Covid-19” by the end of this year.

Xi Jinping spoke after US President Joe Biden stressed, in his first speech at the United Nations, that his country does not seek a cold war and does not want to “divide the world.”

National Interest: Western Powers Unveiled Their Plan to Counter China. It Won’t Work.

They say that the pen is mightier than the sword, but the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia must have missed the memo. Perhaps these countries would benefit from hearing the proverb in more modern terms: The checkbook is mightier than the nuclear submarine.

This week, President Biden joined Prime Minister Johnson of the UK and Prime Minister Morris of Australia in announcing their new trilateral plans to expand the nuclear submarine fleet of Australia and share military intelligence. The oddly named “AUKUS” is an expected move; Biden promised to combat China using like-minded allies in the region. However, without the buy-in of the nations they are attempting to defend, the plan will be nothing more than an expensive way to escalate tensions in the region.

Military power alone cannot counter China.

Zhao Lijian of the Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the agreement, saying the three nations should “do more that is conducive to regional peace and stability and development”. While any statement from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) should be taken with some healthy skepticism, Zhao has a point. Why isn’t the United States doing more to help the region?

In the past two years, the Western powers have begun to take the threat of China in the Indo-Pacific more seriously. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper visited Palau to establish diplomatic relations and agreed to a military base on the island. Congress established a committee focused on the South Pacific in 2019, and the United States has established a trilateral alliance in the region as of yesterday.

Western powers have also committed their fair share of blunders. No Western power even tried to stop Kiribati and the Solomon Islands from taking Chinese aid and changing their tunes on Taiwan (they no longer recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation). The Pacific Islands Forum ended in complete disaster after France and Australia broke from decorum and elected a new secretary. The decision by the United States and India to pull out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership decreased their economic ties in the region. Finally, the U.S.-China summit in Alaska completely failed to provide anything of substance, deepening the divide between the two powers.

The only successful countering the West has done has been military in nature. Diplomacy hasn’t just taken a back seat; it has actively exacerbated the situation.

There’s no surprise that nations in the region look to China for aid and support; it’s the only option. Australia offered grants to smaller nations in the area but still acted as a mother-state, requiring the money to be spent in specific sectors, claiming to know more about the country than itself. The United States is currently offering small grants as part of the COVID-19 recovery package in the region, but only to organizations with Western ties. China provides loans and grants without earmarks. Western ideals like democracy are popular in the region, but Western powers have closed their wallets and rolled up the red carpet on the small countries whose interests they claim to represent.

Until the United States opens up financing and support to these small nations, their only path to further development will be through China. The G7 promised a program to counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative. However, as of yet, nothing has been announced.

Similar to efforts in Palau, continuing to establish relations will be vital in countering expanding Chinese influence. AUKUS is a military agreement that will undoubtedly make the Chinese try harder in the region; however, the United States, UK, Australia, Japan, India, and New Zealand should be making dozens of other diplomatic and financial agreements.

The Pentagon: Russia is more dangerous than China in the short term

The Pentagon suggested that Russia may constitute in the short term the most serious security problem facing the United States and Europe in the military field.

During his video participation in the “Baltic Military Conference” held in Lithuania, US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs Colin Kahl said that China may pose a major threat to the United States, but Russia may pose a bigger problem in the short term.

“In the coming years, Russia may indeed pose the greatest security challenge facing the United States, and certainly Europe, in the military sphere,” he said, according to the text of his remarks published on the US Defense Department’s website.

The US official described Russia as “an increasingly resolute adversary in its steadfast pursuit of strengthening its influence in the world and playing a destabilizing role internationally, including through attempts to divide the countries of the West.”

He added that “Russia’s behavior in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, and in the cyber field, constitutes a serious challenge for the United States and its allies,” accusing Moscow of “undermining transparency and predictability, using military force to achieve its goals, and supporting proxy groups in order to sow chaos and suspicion and undermine order.” global rules-based activity through cyber and international activities,” as well as “Russia’s breach of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its neighbors.

Cal said that the United States “will deal with Russia from a position of collective power,” stressing that US forces deployed in Europe “remain strong, ready, resilient, and provide solid and effective deterrence.”

“We are working in NATO with our allies and partners to ensure military readiness to bolster robust combat deterrence throughout the transatlantic community,” he added.

Russia has repeatedly rejected Western accusations about its behavior, warning against positioning NATO at its borders.
